So, last week I told you about my struggles to set goals throughout my life and the frustrations as a result of said struggles.

Run in 2015

Through much prayer, contemplation and conversations with trusted individuals I have decided to put forth a strong concerted effort to change my drifting ways.

This week I will be working through Michael Hyatt’s 5 Days to Your Best Year Ever to prepare to make 2015 my best year ever multiple areas of my life. Here is a summary of the things I will be working on over this week:

  1. Believe in the Possibility – An examination of self-limiting beliefs and how to overcome them. I completed this today and will tell you more in a moment.
  2. Complete the Past – In order to move confidently into the future you must first do business with the past.
  3. Design Your Future – This is getting specific on what I will do in 2015.
  4. Identify Your Why – What is my motivation for setting these goals. Most people don’t achieve their goals because there why simply isn’t strong enough. Check out this Simon Sinek Ted Talk on the importance of knowing your why.
  5. Make it Happen – Seven steps to fulfilling my goals.

As I mentioned above I told you I would tell you more about today’s lesson on examining my self-limiting beliefs. This is a courageous thing for anyone to do.

Looking at ourselves and our failures is not fun. However, in order to move forward to achieve our goals we need to know what our starting point is so we can get past it. Here are the top 5 self-limiting beliefs I came up with for myself:

  1. I’m not good enough – This happens for me in a lot of areas.
  2. I’m not worthy of good things happening to me.
  3. I have little control over what happens in my life.
  4. I’m not a goal-setter.
  5. I’m a great starter and a lousy finisher.

This is a scary thing for me to share these with you but it’s important to bring the darkness into the light. In order for me to achieve my goals, undetermined at this point in time, I need to work through these self-limiting beliefs.

I’m not sure how much of this journey I will share with you as I go through this process. Time will tell.

For me, this isn’t about setting new years resolutions. We’ve all seen the statistics of how quickly those go to the wayside.

This is about making real change in my life to use the gifts, talents, and abilities I’ve been given to make a difference for others. For too long I’ve lived the old adage of, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got.”

If you are looking to take some courageous steps this year I would encourage you to check out Hyatt’s five day program. It’s available at a reduced rate until Thursday, Dec. 18. After the 18th the price will go up but will still be worth the investment!

Do you have the courage to really make a change?
