The last time the Chicago Cubs won the World Series, Henry Ford had just created the Model T automobile and was selling it for $850.
Literally generations of Cubs fans have been saying, “Someday the Cubs will win the World Series again!”
Last Wednesday night loyal Cub followers got to say goodbye to someday when the Cubs beat the Cleveland Indians in a great extra inning nail biter in the seventh game of the series.
At the first commercial break after the win Nike ran a great piece, I won’t call it a commercial, as an ode to all those faithful fans, living and dead, who followed the team through decade after decade of futility. You can see the video above.
There were many great stories of lifelong fans and how they celebrated this historic event after waiting so long.
The one that struck me was that of 68 year-old North Carolina resident Wayne Williams. Williams and his father had a pact that when the Cubs got to the World Series they would get together to enjoy the games.
Unfortunately, Williams father, also named Wayne, passed away in 1980.
When the Cubs won game six the younger Williams determined he would get up the next day and drive from North Carolina to his father’s gravesite in Indiana and listen to the game with his father.
Together with his father Walt got to say goodbye to someday as their beloved Cubs broke the curse!
When asked what he did when they won Williams said, “I just kind of said, ‘We did it,’ like I had anything to do with it.”
Williams, along with possibly millions of other Cubs fans, suffering was finally over. Williams recognized that he really didn’t have anything to do with it. Sure, fan support is important but it can only be won or lost on the field.
They could all finally say goodbye to someday but they had no control in making that happen.
Cubs fans had their someday of eventually winning a world series.
We all have our somedays.
Someday we’re going to write a book. Someday we’re going to open our own business. Someday we’re going to apply for that position we’ve always wanted. Someday we’re going to lose weight. Someday I’m going to break off that relationship that is destroying me.
The difference between the Cubs someday and our someday is that we have control over our someday.
We can actually do something about our someday.
It takes courage to pursue our somedays.
What is your someday and what will you courageously do this week so you can say goodbye to someday?
